Keating Chambers, a leading barristers’ chambers in the fields of technology, construction, energy and environmental law, has today announced that it has become the first barristers’ set to team up with The CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world's leading carbon offset and climate consulting businesses. Keating Chambers will identify its "carbon footprint" or the approximate volume of CO2 generated by the organisation. It has committed to reduce that footprint as far as possible and offset the unavoidable balance.
Keating Chambers’ initiatives over the past year to reduce energy consumption and make environmentally responsible decisions has led to this further action, implemented following discussions that showed members to be keen to do their utmost for the environment and enthusiastic about making the required investment in becoming CarbonNeutral®. Further initiatives have been put in place:
- An ongoing review of suppliers to explore the viability of using "green" alternatives and energy from renewable resources.
- Significant support provision from Keating Chambers to a diverse "offset project portfolio" of international innovative energy solutions, including a hydro power project in India, a windfarm in New Zealand, and a methane capture and power project in Germany, all of which are leaders in their own field.
Commenting on the initiative, John Marrin QC, Head of Chambers, said:
"Climate change cannot be ignored and we should all be seeking to play our part in addressing it. For some time, we have been seeking to make an impact by reducing our emissions. We have now decided that we should go further by seeking to offset unavoidable emissions. We like to think of ourselves as amongst those leading the way, in that we are the first set of barristers’ chambers to join with The CarbonNeutral Company in contributing to the development of new technologies and renewable energy supplies.
We are enthusiastic about working with The CarbonNeutral Company. We see them as representing the leading expertise in the field and having the experience to assist us in our requirements, both now and in future."
Jonathan Shopley, Executive Director, The CarbonNeutral Company, said:
“It is great to see a leading barristers’ chambers taking this issue seriously and working hard to achieve CarbonNeutral status.
We hope Keating Chambers’ stance will encourage other sets to follow suit and reduce their carbon emissions.”
