John McMillan joins Keating Chambers

Date: 3 February 2020

We are delighted to announce that John McMillan is joining Keating Chambers with effect from 17 February 2020.

Before joining Keating, John was Counsel at WilmerHale, where he had practised since 2014 in the highly respected international arbitration group headed up by Gary Born.  John was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012. He specialises in high-value, complex arbitration and litigation, with a particular focus on the construction, engineering, energy, and technology sectors.

John has advised on or acted in arbitrations under the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, SCC, NAI and ICSID rules, involving common-law, civil-law and international-law issues. Having studied Chinese at Oxford University, John speaks and reads Chinese which has been invaluable in disputes involving Chinese parties. His international arbitration experience includes acting as tribunal secretary.  He is an assistant editor of the Journal of International Arbitration and the author of the chapter on private international law in the forthcoming International Commercial contracts: Law & practice (OUP).

Marcus Taverner QC, Head of Keating Chambers, says “John is the third recent addition to Chambers and his arrival demonstrates the continued growth and ongoing success of Keating. We are very pleased to welcome him. “

Declan Redmond, CEO, also comments “John will be an excellent asset to Chambers. It is fantastic to have someone who is not only a qualified barrister but also has experience of working in a prestigious international law firm.”

Gary Born, Chair of WilmerHale’s international arbitration group said “It has been a pleasure to work closely with John on a number of major arbitrations over the last few years.  He is a very talented advocate, with excellent strategic judgment.  We wish him every success in his move to the bar.”
